I’m Carling, the designer and educator behind Carling Loves Cats, based in Houston, Texas. I specialize in creating thoughtfully designed sewing and quilting patterns that balance creativity with ease of understanding. My goal is to help quilters of all skill levels embrace quilting with confidence, curiosity, and creativity while making something truly their own.

 

Before fully immersing myself in the world of quilting and design, I spent over 20 years in the aerospace engineering industry, working on NASA’s Space Shuttle and International Space Station programs. That background continues to shape my approach to quilting, blending precision, problem-solving, and attention to detail with artistic expression and modern style.

 

I am the creator of the bestselling Carling Loves Cats Quilt Coat pattern, known for its versatile design options and approachable construction. My teaching focuses on making quilting accessible, enjoyable, and unintimidating, with an emphasis on fit, design choices, and thoughtful technique. I love helping new quilters build strong skills while encouraging experienced quilters to push their creativity further.

 

I’ve had the joy of teaching at the Houston International Quilt Festival Open Studios, where I shared my passion for quilt coat design and the many creative possibilities within the process, as well as at multiple Quilters Life Summits. I also love teaching quilt coat construction in quilt shop or guild settings, where students can explore design options, fit, and techniques in a supportive, hands-on environment. Whether teaching in person or online, through presentations or hands-on instruction, I’m committed to creating an encouraging learning environment where students feel inspired and empowered.

 

 

Giving Back

 

I am a small business dedicated to giving back to the local animal shelter community, as well as to customers like you who enable me to do what I love while supporting these shelters. Since 2015, I have donated to these amazing organizations (including all proceeds from 2015 to 2022) to Red Collar Rescue and Joyrides Rescue.

 

Joyrides Rescue is a 501(c)(3) animal welfare charity, an all-volunteer organization that pulls animals from local high-kill shelters and provides care until they find their forever homes, regardless of age, breed, or health issues. Red Collar Rescue is a 501(c)(3) animal welfare charity, also run by volunteers, dedicated to rescuing stray and abandoned dogs and cats in Houston and providing them with medical care and adoptive placements.
